Freight Shipping Class & Density Calculator

Estimate NMFC freight class from shipment weight and dimensions using the standard density scale.

Formula

Density drives the class

Density = Weight ÷ Volume (ft³)  →  Class (density-based table)
VolumeLength × width × height × number of pieces, converted from cubic inches to cubic feet (÷ 1728)
DensityTotal weight divided by total volume, in pounds per cubic foot
ClassLooked up from the standard published NMFC density scale, from class 400 (under 1 lb/ft³) down to class 50 (50+ lb/ft³)
FAQ

Common questions

LTL carriers price by how much trailer space a shipment occupies relative to its weight. A light, bulky shipment (low density) takes up space the carrier could otherwise fill with heavier freight, so it’s classified — and priced — as if it were more expensive to move, even though it weighs less.
