eGFR Calculator

Estimate kidney function from serum creatinine, age, and sex using the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation.

Uses the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 creatinine equation for adults (18+). For patients under 18, use a pediatric eGFR calculator instead.

Estimated GFR
71mL/min/1.73m²
CKD stage
G2
What this stage means

Mildly decreased kidney function

Not a diagnosis. This estimate is for informational and educational purposes only. Kidney function assessment depends on trends over time, urine tests, and clinical context that only a healthcare provider can evaluate. Always discuss results with a doctor.

Formula

How eGFR is calculated

eGFR = 142 × min(Scr/κ, 1)^α × max(Scr/κ, 1)^-1.2 × 0.9938^Age × (1.012 if female)
ScrSerum creatinine, in mg/dL
κ (kappa)0.7 for female, 0.9 for male
α (alpha)-0.241 for female, -0.302 for male
0.9938^AgeAdjusts for the normal decline in GFR with age

CKD stages by eGFR

StageeGFR rangeDescription
G1≥ 90Normal or high
G260–89Mildly decreased
G3a45–59Mildly to moderately decreased
G3b30–44Moderately to severely decreased
G415–29Severely decreased
G5< 15Kidney failure

In the absence of other markers of kidney damage, stages G1 and G2 alone do not meet the criteria for chronic kidney disease.

FAQ

Common questions

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) measures how well the kidneys filter waste from the blood, and is considered the best overall indicator of kidney function. Because directly measuring GFR is impractical in routine care, clinicians estimate it (eGFR) from a blood test for serum creatinine, along with age and sex.
